Internet in China

Add caption
The internet as Americans and millions and perhaps billions of people around the world have used the internet freely and uncensored, but China and a few other countries have been trying really hard to censor/control the access of  content that it's citizens are allowed to view. In the United States about 78% of the populaation has access or willingly use the internet compared to the 36% of China. It's important to remember that those 36% are almost double the amount users than that of the United States.

This attempt at controlling the internet by the Chinese Government has some IT companies worried and abandoning the 1.3 Billion potential consumers within the country. Google,Inc. is a prime example of a leading IT company that has left China after it was being continuously hacked and told to censor and block out certain websites as part of the agreement between the Government and Google.  Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google is worried that Governments throughout the world will try to exert more control over the access of content that it's citizens have.
The Chinese government does not plan on easing up on it's endeavor of controlling its citizens access to content that paints the government in a bad light or gives its citizens knowledge about life in other countries. Since 2010 the government has been blocking search engine searches for the word "freedom". This type of censorship is worst because it does not allow for its citizens to compete in the future with the rest of the world in tech jobs because it would mean having big brother over your shoulder as you are working. Censorship has no place on the internet of the 21st century and ahead.

Twitter Infographic

create infographics with visual.ly This info graphic shows the numbers behind the twitter accounts of Kevin Durant and Dwayne Wade of the NBA. The beauty of the infographic is that it shows the information in an eye catching view and is easy to interpret and understand.

Looking at the graph it is easy to see that Wade has more followers with 2.89 million compared to 1.64 million followers for Durant. Kevin Durant does have 1.2K : 1 follower to following ration unlike Wade who has a 8.5K. This shows that Durant is just a rising young star that stays in touch with fans and is more likely to follow fans than Dwayne Wade.

Looking at the Followers by region it is easy to see that Wade has a bigger followed base in the US compared to Durant. Both players have the potential to increase their follower base tremendously if either of their teams can win a Championship this season. Durant has the biggest twitter upside because of his engagement with followers and his basketball potential.

Splunk

1. What does Splunk do and offer ?
Splunk is a company founded around making machine data accessible and easy to use by everyone. Machine data is the part of big data that is collected by any and all interactions that a person has with a company. It includes websites, applications, servers and other computer devices used on a daily basis. Splunk provides analytics for clients to turn all that machne data, transaction, call records and so on into operational inteligence to allow clients to reach their target market.

Cloudera

1.What is Hadoop and why is it a big deal ?
Hadoop is a software framework that allows users to change the application code to customize it to their big data analytic needs. Hadoop is an Apache open source being developed by a world wide community of developers. It is based around earlier work done by Google on their MapReduce application. MapReduce allows distributed computing of large data sets on a cluster of computers. Hadoop is a big deal because it is a open source project that allows custom code that allows business to analyze complex data sets that otherwise would have been hard to make sense of using standard data tables. Hadoop is used by a lot of different big companies but most business are not ready to use it just yet because of the high level analytic expertise and training it requires.

2. Who are Cloudera?
It is a company that specializes in Apache Hadoop software and support services around it on an enterprise level they also contribute to Apache projects related to Hadoop. Cloudera offers two products; the first which is Cloudera Enterprise and the other being  Cloudera's Distribution including Apache Hadoop.

3.What is PIG?
It is a high level data flow language used in conjunction with Hadoop. The language is called Pig Latin and it is a form of Java that allows for fast ad-hoc analysis of data sets. Users can create their own functions for special purpose data processing.

4.What is HIVE ?
HIVE functions as a data warehouse that allows for query based analysis of larger data sets. It uses a SQL like languange for its queries. It functions along side Hadoop files systems and just like Hadoop it is open-source and apache developed.

5. What is Cassandra?
Cassandra is an Apache open source database management system. It can handle large volumes of data that is spread out around many different servers. It started out as a way for Facebook to power their inbox search function. It uses NoSQL because traditional SQL based databases can be slow when dealing with big data sets.

6. What is Mahout ?
Mahout it is a suite of machine learning libraries that is designed to be  scalable and robust. it is another Apache open source project that is degined to work with Hadoop. Hadoop is associated with big data and Mahout is the word for a person driving an elephant. The elephant is Hadoop and Mahout wants to be the driving force behind it, but not lead the development of Hadoop.

Many Eyes

This Pie chart shows the racial make up of the US population during the 2000 census. The Chart shows that White was and still is the largest section of the population. White makes up 84.4% of the population , while all the other ethnicities and races combine to almost 16% of the population. There has been a big shift in the make up of the population since the 2000 census. This visualization shows China's population and its births per year. Its population has been increasing since at a steady pace from 1995 to 2009. During that timespan China has added 100,000,000 million people to its population while also enacting its One Child policy. Its growth is expected to slow down as the country will have to deal with the consequnces of the one child policy. The female population compared to the male population is very heavily skewed towards males as parents chose to only raise males in order to pass on family inheritances to them instead of females. This graph shows the population of the United States during its first ever census. This census also included the number of slaves owned by Southern states. Virginia was the largest state in terms of population, if you combine Georgia, Vermont, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Maryland then you would have the population of Virginia

Energy Production and Electric Power Consumption

This motion chart shows the energy production of the United States and China as well as the electric power consumption by the two nations since 1960. One can see as from before the United States is the leader in energy production by a wide margin during the 60's with China not even present. The chart will reaffirm the incredible leap that China generated by focusing its manpower into manufacturing. Looking at the chart in motion it is visible that China's electric power consumption in 1993 matched the United States electric power consumption in 1960. It took China 30 years to get to that level of consumption and energy production. From 1996 to 1999 the energy production of China seemed to be stalling and reaching its peak. Then in the new millennium China's energy production skyrocketed over the next decade to unbelievable levels in a short amount of time. While China has been growing in terms of production and consumption, the United States stalled on production but steadily increased its electric power consumption. Consumption by US consumers has thus been supported through importation. Production capacity has been at the about the same levels since 1984. Where all the extra electric power comes from is a mystery to me still

US vs China: Oil Production and GDP per capita

This motion chart is comparing the energy production (including crude oil, natural gas, and oil from non-conventional sources) and the Per Capita growth for the most of the world going as far back as 1960. The chart shows the early days of US energy dominance , China's growing energy consumption and the US fall from the number one spot. It also shows how the GDP per capita has grown through the years.

The first thing that you notice is how in 1960 the United States is the leading energy produce. The United States also had the best GDP per capita narrowly beating Sweden. Throughout the 60's energy production was rising sharply. You will notice that China does not appear until 1971 as a energy producer of any noticeable size. This was in part to the country rebuilding during the 50's and 60' from WW2 as well as its new  Communist government trying to organize the country.

During the 70's the US was in a enrgy crisis because of the oil embargo the OAPEC (Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries) placed on the country for supplying weapons to the Israeli military. This created  a stall and reduction in oil production and GDP was stagnant for most of the decade. The whole time China's oil production has grown at a trmendously high pace while its GDP per capita was only slightly increasing. In 2007 China managed to outproduce the US but its GDP per capita is 17 times smaller than that of the US

The Big Switch

There are five Talking points that Nicholas Carr is going over in his presentation on Cloud Computing
1.Henry Burdens Water wheel
2.Main Frame
3.20% utilization
4.Google Data Center
5. The low cost of computing is creating a boom for virtualization
  1. Cloud computing is increasing at a rapid pace just as the manufacturing industry did, that means having to create your own reliable source of power to keep your service going 24/7
  2. Mainframe computing was not usable by most of management and most  workers within a company, it was centralized in a location
  3. Today's privately owned and used data centers by big corporations are only being using 20% of its capacity
  4. Cloud computing is a new resource for business and as such is going to a huge boom of computing center construction, Google is building centers that are sustainable by them-self with their own power source
  5. With the low cost of computing today companies are able to virtualize just about anything that they

Internet vs. Telegraph

Similarities

1.     Both allow for long range communication in a matter of moments in what could takes days if one were to travel by foot or try to communicate by mail.
2.     They both have their messages encoded for transmission and both have to have their messages decoded upon reception. The electric telegraph has the Morse code and the internet has binary code
3.     Both have  fostered transcontinental trade and helped make the world a smaller place in terms of communication
Differences

1.     The internet allows for point-to-many communication, this means that one person is able to reach multiple people in a transmission. The electric telegraph is a point-to-point form of telecommunication; this means that it is communication from one telegraph to another telegraph.
2.     The internet allows for users to communicate in more than one form of transmission. With the internet you can use audio, video, and text to send your message out. It also allows people to access that information at any point in time.
3.     The internet is also a storage medium for information where as the telegraph is just a transmission tool to send out information, once it was sent out it was up to both parties to keep a log the transmissions and there was no way of being able to check and see if the transmissions took place until a reply was received.
Interesting Fact about the Electric Telegraph
  •  In the 1866 Western Union bought the last two competitors in the industry to become the first business monopoly in the United States.

Movie Review

Ip Man

Ip Man is a overly dramatized biograpiical movie about Yip “ Ip” Man. He is the first master of Wing Chun fighting style. The movie follows Ip Man from his days just before Japan invaded China in the 1930’s and his struggle to provide for his family. The movie also is about rising up to oppression and equality between nations and races. The movie is also packed with greatly executed martial arts sequences by Donnie Yen as Master Ip

Reasons I like the movie
1.Fast paced execution of Wing Chun kung fu
2.It’s based on the life of the master and mentor of the great Bruce Lee
3.It has a great message about equality and pride, even though it might come across as pro-Chinese to some people
